Educational Support

In response to the unprecedented impact of Covid 19 on our educational communities, it has become evident that there is a need to provide a central resource for teaching staff to access and review the tools and resources needed to shift from traditional face to face instruction to an online learning paradigm.
Resources and materials have proliferated in recent weeks as online learning becomes the targeted norm for school districts across North America.

Accordingly, this resource does not claim to provide an exhaustive listing of the available material, but it is hoped that this site will provide a solid starting point for educators.
How to use these pages: On the individual pages, links to the various resources are indicated by an underline beneath the name or title of the resource. Mouse over the underlined words to reveal the link, then depress the CTRl key and right click to follow the link. An index of the resources included on these pages is provided below.

  • Newsela: a literacy development site that provides leveled, engaging, and topical reading material on a wide variety of subject areas and topics
  • TedEd: provides ready made lessons and short videos on a wide variety of topics and subject areas across the curriculum;​ 
  • Epic: a repository of over 40,000 titles for students up to age 12

  Scholastic Resources 
  • ​Scholastic: has opened access to their suite of tools for educators, for free, for the remainder of the 2019/20 school year. Educators can now access Bookflix, Trueflix, Shared eReading, Scienceflix, and Scholastic Go!
  • Scholastic has also created Scholastic Learn-at-home for students and children Pre-K through Grade 9.​ ​
   Learning A-Z
  • Learning A-Z has a comprehensive and very well respected suite of literacy tools to support K-6 students in developing reading skills. Their suite includes Reading A-Z, RAZ-Kids, RAZ-Plus, Vocabulary A-Z, Headsprout, Writing A-Z, ELL Edition, and Science A-Z.
   General Resources (K-7)
  • Destiny Discover: the library management system has online resources useful for home instruction.
  • Khan Academy provides online courses for students, and is noted for their Math programs.
  • cK-12 has a wide variety of programs across the curriculum.
  • We are Teachers has a comprehensive list of links to sites for teaching elementary school students.
  • Wide Open School from Common Sense Media provides a link for PreK - Gr 5 learning opportunities across a wide variety of topics from life skills to core subjects. (Grades 6 & 7 are covered under the high school link.)
  • PebbleGo has K-3 learning resources and material.  (Instructions for logging in on the K-7 page)
  • PebbleGo Next provides searchable databases in Science, Social Studies, and more to inspire children's research. Serves grade 3-5. (Instructions for logging in on the K-7 page). 
   Literacy Resources (K-7)
  • Audible has opened their narrated books to students.​
  • Epic: a repository of over 40,000 titles for students up to age 12
  • LightBox AV2 through Follett/Destiny is offering access to thousands of titles in their e-Book collection through June 2020. (individual log in set up required)
  • ​In Our Own Words K-3 Authentic Resources has been developed by First Nations Education Steering Committee to guide teachers in using authentic content in providing culturally inclusive and meaningful learning opportunities for First Nations children.
  • The Children's Poetry Archive is a repository of poetry readings by authors, and contains works suitable for toddlers to middle grades.
  • Orca Book Publishers have provided a link to online resources including author readings, distance learning links, free downloads, and resource websites. They also have subscriptions available for their books.
Science Resources (K-7)
  • Science A-Z provides a "captivating K-6 curriculum" through multi-level informational text across the sciences (space, physical, life, engineering, and STEM) coupled with hands on activities and experiments. 
  • ​FNESC Science Gr 5-9 developed in accordance with First Peoples principles of learning.
  • Let's Talk Science for ages 3 to 17 provides online learning activities and challenges focused on Science and STEM topics.
  • Environmental Film Festival environmental films on a wide variety of topics and issues.
  • Journey 2050 offers a unique virtual farming experience that gives students realistic exposure to farming, food production, and land management, with global implications. Designed for Grade 7 +

  • Khan Academy is known for its stellar Math program.
  • Multimedia K-7 Math Resources provides access to their full suite of Math Resources designed to support planning, teaching, and assessing with the goal of building Math mastery. The site is offered for a 180 day free trial due to Covid 19.​
  • Math Central from the University of Regina provides a comprehensive site including a searchable resource room with lesson plans and learning activities across grade/age levels. Free site.
  • ​Virtual Nerd offers tutorial videos on Math skills for Grades 6-8. Free site.
  • Math Games lists a wide variety of learning and skill building games to engage K-7 students.

  • Khan Academy offers comprehensive Math programs at the high school level, as well as skill  building resources at junior levels.
  • FNESC Math Gr 8/9 First Peoples Math resource guide.
  • Math Central from the University of Regina provides a comprehensive site including a searchable resource room with lesson plans and learning activities across grade/age levels. Free site.
  • Virtual Nerd offers a variety of tutorial videos on Math, Algebra, and Geometry, laid out in clear steps, for Grades 8-12. Free site.
  • Math Games lists a wide variety of games to build Math skills for high school students.

  • Canadian Geographic Education presents an Indigenous Educational Resources page with links to and lessons around the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada. 
  • First Nations Education Steering Committee has developed a site with multiple resources across grade levels, and with different foci, all aligned with First Peoples Principles of Learning​. While more resources are available, some highlights include:
